Worth Far More than Rubies

Candi Summers is a wonderful gal I met through a mutual friend on Facebook.  I learned from her frequent posts that she was a knitting, crocheting, homeschooling mom who continually works for the benefit of others.  Her short spikey hair isn't a fashion statement; it's short because she shaved it off for charity.  Again.  Candi advocates for folks with autism.

And as if that all weren't enough, Candi invented a "girl scout" kind of program for the young ladies in her homeschool group called Ruby Scouts.  The name comes from Proverbs 31 (vs. 10): "A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies."  These young ladies study this beautiful piece of Biblical literature a bit at a time during their Second Saturday of the Month meetings.  Candi has paired the study with appropriate crafts and activities to solidify the lesson.

Today, they took a field trip to learn more about verses 13 and 19 of that chapter: "She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands...  In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers."

This great (big) group of kids and moms toured the farm, met the sheep, alpacas and chickens, and then spent time in the Little Red Barn learning about how wool and fiber moves from the animal to finished products.

They even did a little spinning of their own.  I was so impressed with everyone - this large group spoke and acted so respectfully to me and to the animals and each other... you don't see that every day.  Ruby Scouts are welcome here anytime.

A big thank you to Candi, the moms and kids of the Ruby Scouts for a really great visit.  Y'all come back now, hear?

  1. Blush! You are too kind, Cindy!!! We had the BEST time! We will certainly be back!!! I am very blessed to have truly lovely moms and girls in our Ruby Scout troop! I love having this group to teach handcrafts to each month because they are so lovely, respectful, curious, and just plain fun.

  2. How great to see young ones learning fibery skills! You're a fantastic shepherd, Cindy!! xoxo

  3. What a great thing to be part of, Cindy! You never know what those kids may make use of from their visit to you, in their futures! Crafting, designing, keeping livestock!
Best wishes for more of the same
